Scary Words # 21: Plausibility & Fruitfulness

(Book: Wood, L.A. & Kroger. R.O. (2000). Doing Discourse Analysis: Methods for Studying Action in Talk and Text. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications.)

Plausibility as we use the term refers to whether or not a set of claims is acceptable (or more strongly, praiseworthy – deserving applause). […] Good interpretations should bring clarity, should direct attention to what is usually unnoticed, and should yield a sense of insight.” (174)

Potter and Wetherell (1987) identify fruitfulness as “the scope of analytic schemes to make sense of new kinds of discourse and to generate novel explanations”. […] We consider the implications of the present work for other work, rather than considering the present work from the perspective of previous work.” (p. 175)
