Scary Words # 16: Reliability

(Book: Wood, L.A. & Kroger. R.O. (2000). Doing Discourse Analysis: Methods for Studying Action in Talk and Text. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications.)

“[Reliability is the] repeatability of findings across samples, rates, measures, parts of measure, over time, etc.” (p. 164)

Reliability is problematic in DA, as “the same movements can have different meanings in different contexts.” p. (164)

Sometimes differences of interpretation are due to different levels of analytical concepts, views of the context, etc.

“There is always the possibility of a new interpretation.” (p. 165)
